New lawn installation in Victoria, BC

When it comes to new lawn installations, the team at Costa Verde is very experienced. Since we started our business in 2007, we’ve installed countless numbers of lawns. Over that time we’ve come to understand what works and what doesn’t in our beautiful city.

Lawns are an important aspect and focal point of many residential landscapes and so we invest a lot of time training our staff on soil science and the nuances of growing and maintaining grass. Our team is more than capable of handling projects of any size and scope.

Please keep in mind that while we would love to be able to take on any request, due to the volume of inquiries we receive throughout the year we focus our energy on lawn installations as part of larger scopes of work only.

If you are looking for a stand-alone lawn renovation or new installation we can recommend a few great companies in town that might be able to help you instead!

Our Process

After 15 years of installing lawns all over Greater Victoria we’ve come to understand the importance of achieving long term success. We’ve seen far too many people invest significant amounts of money only to have their lawn fail a year later.

Our approach at Costa Verde is to work with our clients to build lasting and thriving lawns. Our team excavates lawns to the right depths and grade, with the correct drainage before installing quality lawn soils. We go to great lengths to limit compaction which can be a major contributing factor to lawn failure.

What may make us unique is that we prefer to establish lawns from seed as opposed to sod. Grass does better long term when grown from seed in situ and we can attest to that! While there are legitimate instances where sod is the best option, we know that most of the time seed works best in our city and our clients are happier with the results.

Seeding

Seeding a lawn is less expensive and this is often the biggest selling feature for our clients. It is much easier to stomach potential growth challenges when you haven’t spent thousands of dollars on sod and labour. Seed also offers expanded variety options to fit the specific needs of each property.

The downside with seed is that it is only an option in Victoria, BC from March until mid-September. It takes longer to get established requiring multiple rounds of seeding, and it requires slightly more maintenance. However, we share instructions with all our clients on how to properly take care of newly seeded lawns and you will quickly learn how to grow and maintain great-looking grass (unless you want us to take care of this for the longer-term). If maintained properly, in a year’s time we promise that you will have a much more resilient lawn!

Sodding

People forget that, like all living things, sodded grass still needs help to grow and thrive. We are able to share instructions on how to properly take care of newly installed sodded grass and improve its longevity, but in our experience without significant attention, sodded lawns become just as much of a maintenance challenge as seeded lawns. The cost and shipment of high-quality sod from growers on the mainland, together with the labour of installing it into your yard, is much more expensive. The type of grass you receive is very generic and not ideal in many applications in our city, and there is a much bigger environmental impact when buying sod.

That said there are times where sod is necessary. It can be installed in a wider range of temperatures so there is flexibility in timing, there are less concerns initially with erosion, and it can handle normal lawn traffic much quicker.
